Museum of Marrakech

The Marrakech Museum, in the city of Marrakech, Morocco, is an interesting place to visit, especially for its architecture. The building that now this museum occupies was once a palace, the palace of Mehdi Mnebhi (defence minister of the sultan Moulay Abdelaziz) and it was built at the end of the nineteenth century.

The museum was opened in 1997, when the foundation Omar Benjelloun bought the building to rehabilitate it. Before it had been used as a private house and as female school.

In spite of the fact that this museum organizes permanent and temporary exhibitions, it is not usually visited by tourists  except to admire its architecture. In its interior there are beautiful front doors in marquetry, immense lounges with large lamps, fountains and rooms with wooden ceilings painted in bright colours.

And if we talk about the museum itself, in its collection you can see, among other elements, pieces of pottery, carpets, traditional weapons, ancient documents and interesting works of contemporary art.

The Museum of Marrakech is located next to the Ben Youssef madrasah and opens every day from 9:00 until 18:30.
